It is an irrational case of “amour fou” resides in the center of Truffaut’s MISSISSIPPI MERMAID, based on Woolrich's source novel WALTZ INTO DARKNESS, and would spawn a Hollywood remake in 2001, Michael Cristofer’s ORIGINAL SIN, a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas. A charmingly tuneless tribute to the American lovers-on-the-run crime thriller.

Messy here, is the fact that the Director clearly just wanted to have Deneuve take her top off a few times. Even more so than with The Soft Skin this one feels like a straight genre exercise; though technically dedicated to Jean Renoir, this offbeat thriller plays like a love letter to Hitchock.

Truffaut crafted a romance between Deneuve and Belmondo that is a joy to watch and makes this film a classic. The problem is that Truffaut’s tastes in movie-movie form and quotation don’t extend to zigzag deconstruction; he remains ever the morbid romantic.
